The Silver Surfer Statue released in 2008 (and that I generally identify as the action statue for its distinctly dynamic pose) is one of those pieces that in a collection of Marvel statues, in my humble opinion, should not be missed! In fact, thanks to the extremely large edition size (3500 pieces in the world) and the relevant number of alternative statues dedicated to the herald of Galactus (made from many different manufacturers an freelance sculptors), its availability on the market, many years after the official release, is still good and the corresponding quotations generally affordable. This means that, due to the sculptural quality of the item, its excellent aesthetic impact and the undeniable charisma of the character, I would not hesitate to give him a high priority in the hypothetical “shopping list” of any statues collector! Moreover, if you were lucky enough to run into one of the customs par excellence of this sector, where the bright colors of the original piece have been replaced by a chroming plate (made in a workmanlike manner), the priority would become unconditional, even in spite of a probable (and relevant) increase of price. The statue depicts Silver Surfer on his surfboard in a very dynamic pose: the body is elongated, with the left leg bent to support the body weight, the right one totally lying back (almost parallel to the board) and the bust incredibly leaning forward, indicating the high flight speed of the hero. Faithful to the tables of Comics and the main features of the character, the physique is elegant, slender and well proportioned, with the arms aligned in the direction of motion (the left bent and the right stretched) and the clenched fists to suggest an attack position. The sculpt highlights very well the muscles of the arms and legs, the well defined chest and the large shoulders. The face is substantially identical to the museum pose versions, carved with great care and characterized by large white eyes, outlined in black. The base, black colored and elliptical in shape, is equipped with a vertical support on which the board of the hero rests, thus providing the best mount for the aerial pose, unobtrusive from the visual point of view and perfect in ensuring the right balance to the figure. This (painted or chromed) Silver Surfer is no doubt a statue of uncommon class and elegance, and (in my opinion) a real must-have for any collector.
